Markham tells Henry he opened the August Psychology and was delighted to see the inspiring articles. He thanks him for for the fine illustration which decorates his poem done by Mr. Cameron Wright. The letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
